We received this healthy batch of Broad Breasted White turkeys in July.
They spent their fragile first three weeks in one of our brooders where they relaxed with fresh water, feed and heated lamps overhead.
After 3 weeks they moved out into our predator-proof pasture pens. This is the middle stage where the turkeys are ready for pasture but still too small to stay inside an electric fence.
When the turkeys put on a little size, around 8 weeks, they are joined by Bill, our guard goose, and together they move into a paddock enclosed with electric fencing.
The group is moved to a fresh paddock every few days. This pasture-management system ensures the turkeys are always on fresh grass and that the pasture receives an appropriate amount of disturbance and recovery. This process feeds the soil and promotes grass growth, increasing the health of our pasture over the course of the pastured poultry season.
Our pastured turkey's diet includes grass and insects, and they are supplemented with locally grown and milled non-GMO feed, comprised of whole grains, legumes, and premium minerals. This gives them all the nutrients they need to be healthy.
These turkeys never leave our farm! After 16-18 weeks, when it comes time to process and package, we suit up and handle the job ourselves. This allows us to pay close attention to detail and ensure the highest quality possible for this year's Thanksgiving turkey.
